Description

This is one of the most eye catching as well as larger smithsonite specimen that came in a berg aukas collection that we bought in Munich last month. Featuring a rare combination of minerals in a large format with elevated strucures that lean away from and up off the matrix creating good relief. Despite its pale color this smithsonite is impressive due to its high flashy luster and sharp morphology.

In addition where ever the matrix is visible in openings in-between the abundant covering of smithsonite these areas are completely coated with white willemite needles typical for the species from this locale. The back side of this significant specimen features a large cavern visible through and opening that leads on to the front face and is filled with willemite crystals. The smithsonite are exemplary for the species, present as sharp rhombs that exhibit marked translucence and distinct zoning that reveals gemmy exterior visible due to many natural internal cleavages typical for the famous manganoan species from tsumeb.

The last images were taken under shortwave UV revealing an intense red fluorescence in the matrix and the willemite, the willemite crystals turn yellow under longwave UV lighting too. The condition is undamaged.
